Teen on trial today in fatal baby beating
Derris Smith is to appear today in court concerning an attack he had on his girlfriend's 18 month old baby. Derris was trying to potty-train the baby when he slammed the head of the baby into the wall in the bathroom they were in. doctors had to try to take part of the skull off of the baby because the brain was swelling. the baby was not saved. County prosecutor Joe Deters's office usually tries to get the death sentence in a case where a child is murdered but since Derris was 17 at the time this happened they will not be able to do that. I think that Derris should have the toughest sentence that can be given to him. There was no reason to do such a thing to a baby that he was trying to potty train. to sentence this person as a minor is stupid because even a person like this knows what is right and what is wrong.

I agree. A horrbile crime like that deserves the toughest sentence possible. And there's no real difference as to whether he's 17 or 18 in a crime like this. I think he should be tried as an adult.
There is no doubt that he needs to be given the toughest sentence. He knew full well what he was doing when he killed the baby, a few months would not have made a difference in his decision.
I also agree. Even though he can't be charged as an adult yet I think he should indeed be charged as an adult he's old enough to know that was way out of line.
I agree. Toddlers can be very frustrating but that doesn't excuse what he did. I think that he should get the toughest sentence possible because this was a horrible crime. This is proof that young people shouldn't have kids.
i agree. these kind of people deserve the worst kind of punishment. he does deserve the death penalty. he did know what was right and what was wrong.
I just don't understand how someone could beat a baby, let alone kill it. We need to try harder to stop these things from happening.
I agree that this was a ridiculous action for the 17 year old kid to make. By being close to almost an official adult, this man should be sentenced very severly. Throwing a baby's head into the wall should nver be done especially when it is being potty trained. This is an unbelievable action, and this person deserves a very severe punishment.
I agree that he should get the maximum sentance. I also think that he should be tried as an adult he obviously knew what he did was wrong.
try her as an adult a few months shouldn't save her but. this crime is what taints america. Give her the chair!
